GeoComply said Alberta’s regulated iGaming market produced more than 3.2 million geolocation checks in its first week, a tally that reflects the checks made each time a player logs on to place a wager. The company also said more than 100,000 Albertans signed up through GeoComply-enabled platforms and engaged with licensed operators during the opening week.
The busiest period came during the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on July 19, when GeoComply said it recorded more than 53,000 checks. Activity was concentrated in Edmonton and Calgary, especially during the first 72 hours after launch.
Alberta’s market opened on July 13. As of July 22, 36 operators had completed registration criteria with Alberta Gaming, Liquor & Cannabis and commercial agreements with the Alberta iGaming Corporation, and 22 platforms were live.
A later report said GeoComply’s operator partners posted a 99.5% pass rate during the opening week, including the busiest World Cup periods. GeoComply also said the launch marked the first live deployment of its browser-based Adaptive Verification system, which uses a risk-based approach to geolocation and adds extra checks when higher-risk activity is detected.
Anna Sainsbury, GeoComply’s chair and co-founder, said Albertans were eager to expand their choices of safe, regulated ways to play, and that the World Cup’s final matches gave the company an immediate look at the market in action. GeoComply said the figures were an early snapshot and did not claim to be definitive or representative of the entire Alberta market.
