Michigan regulators renewed the operating licences of Detroit’s three commercial casinos on 8 September, keeping MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity Casino and Hollywood Casino at Greektown under state oversight for another year.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board voted unanimously at its regularly scheduled public meeting after a full review of each property’s finances, operations and compliance with the responsible-gaming requirements set out in the Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act.
The annual process has been repeated in previous years, with similar approvals in 2024 and 2025. The casinos are next due for renewal in September 2027.
The notice also recapped the tax framework for Detroit’s casinos. Under current law, they remit 19% of adjusted gross receipts in wagering taxes, split 8.1% to the state and 10.9% to the City of Detroit, and they also make development agreement payments. Retail sports betting receipts are taxed separately at 8.4%, on top of annual regulatory fees.
The board’s responsible-gaming materials say self-exclusion allows people to request voluntary exclusion from legalized gaming activities. They point callers to 1-800-GAMBLER, which connects to Michigan’s Problem Gambling Helpline and its 24/7 support and resources.
The renewal notice also directs patrons to self-exclusion tools including the Disassociated Persons List and the Internet Gaming and Sports Betting Responsible Gaming Database, along with other responsible-gaming resources. It says Michigan residents can also claim a free license for Gamban, the gambling-blocking software, through a partnership with Gamban.
